Pictorial Overview (Book)

WISOMMM is located in two of Newark’s historic districts. WISOMMM Mansions I and II are sit adjacent to Lincoln Park where revitalization plans includes the country’s first African American Music Museum. The WISOMMM African American Education and Cultural Resource center is located in the northern portion of Newark’s Central Business District on James and Washington Streets. It also lies in the James Street Commons Historic District. Immediate neighbors include The Newark Museum, the restored Ballantine House, the Newark Library, St. Michael’s Medical Center, and numerous ground level stores, office towers, parking garages, restaurants and banks.

Other landmark properties include The New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), Military and Washington Parks, Rutgers University, Rutgers and Seton Hall Law Schools, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and Riverfront Stadium. Corporate neighbors include Verizon, IDT, Wachovia Bank, Horizon Blue Cross/Blue Shield and Public Service Electric and Gas Co.

Redevelopment projects that will transform the neighborhood are already scheduled. Projects include the expansion of the Newark Public Library, construction of a residential complex on the site of the Westinghouse building, IDT’s expansion along Broad Street and the completion of a new light rail hub. Major changes to mass transportation are now in the planning and land acquisition stages. New Jersey Transit will build a light rail system that will link the Broad Street Station with Penn Station. A second segment would link Penn Station to the Monorail System at Newark Airport.
